Political Prisoner – Robert Lovelace

Robert Lovelace is currently being held in a prison for participating in a peaceful protest. The only crime he commited was, standing up for his beliefs in protecting our natural resources. In my personal opinion (and the opinion of several others), the only reason why Mr. Lovelace was given the maximum sentencing (6 months) is because, he is of Aboriginal descent (read below for confirmation of my statement) and this is clearly a racial matter.

Mr. Lovelace is a very well respected professor at Queen’s University and Fleming College, both of these facilities are in full support of his opposition against uranium prospecting and mining. From 1984 to 1992, Mr. Lovelace also ran Aboriginal sweat lodges at Kingston Penitentiary to help inmates carry out an important aspect of their Native culture. So although he is familiar with “prison life”, he would rather be at home playing with his children, as any other respectable person would prefer. However, his stance, is that we must all stand firm together to fight this cause and I agree, this stance is completely justifiable and highly warranted.

His opposition – Uranium prospecting and mining

Uranium is the key ingredient for making weapons of mass destruction, the main one being, nuclear weapons. It is also the cause of several serious health ailments, the main one being, cancer. If you have lived near a uranium mine or a nuclear power plant (there are currently 19 Nuclear power plants in Canada and talks about opening a 20th plant in Alberta have begun), your chances of developing cancer and other illnesses are extremely high. If you have worked in a uranium mine or nuclear power plant, chances are you have or will develop cancer or other serious ailments in your life time. If you have served in Afghanistan or in any other country where nuclear weapons have been dispersed, again your chances of developing cancer and other ailments are also very high.

About Robert Lovelace’s case:

On Feb 15, 2008, Robert Lovelace was sentenced to 6 months in prison and fined $25 000 for contempt of court for “failing to acknowledge” that the Crown has the ability to supersede (override) Algonquin law. Although Mr. Lovelace was sentenced to 6 months in prison, several other people (most of whom were also of Aboriginal descent) were also charged for their participation in this peaceful protest, including: Chief Paula Sherman, Harold Perry, Chief Doreen Davis, Earl Badour, Frank Morrison, John Hudson and David Milne. This peaceful protest took place at Ardoch Algonquin First Nations, which is located near Sharbot Lake, Ontario.

On March 18, 2008, several hundred people attended to the Kingston courthouse in support of the other participants that were charged in this case. While we all anticipated the deliverance of additional hefty fines and prison sentencing, what we received was much more alarming and it was made clear by the judicial system of Canada, that this is nothing more than a racial issue.

The cold hard facts:

Robert Lovelace – fined $25,000, plus 2,000 a day until he “purges his contempt” and 6 months prison time.

Paula Sherman – fined $15,000, plus an “undertaking” to obey the terms of the injunction.

Ardoch Algonquin community – fined $10,000, plus 2,000 a day until Robert Lovelace “purges” or takes an “undertaking” to obey the terms of the injunction.

This is what happened on March 18, 2008 during court proceedings:

Frank Morrison, white landowner in contempt of court along with his well prepared defence was swept under the rug. All charges dropped. Poof! No more annoying, time consuming arguments about uranium mining. White man # 1 gets off scot free after living with this charge hanging over his head for seven months. No defence required.

White man # 2, a member of the Christian Peacemakers and a United Church Minister had lived with a contempt charge for the past six months. Once again he was prepared for anything and had good legal representation. All charges dropped.

White man # 3, also a member of The Christian Peacemakers and another longtime recipient of a contempt citing. All charges dropped, although he had to “take an undertaking” not to protest or prevent Frontenac Ventures from exploratory drilling.
